Anthony was really excited, as you can tell:

I would post the picture of Dominic and me, except that I look demented--most likely because the Indians were in the process of getting swept by the worst team in baseball. Which was a fitting introduction to the world of Cleveland sports for my doomed children.

For Mothers Day we went with our neighbors to the Kansas City Zoo. It was a perfect day--sunny most of the time and cool but not cold. Plus the zoo is excellent. I didn't take any pictures of it, but the bridge over the river to the gorilla section looked an awful lot like the bridge on the River Kwai. I kept expecting Obi Won to show up with the humming Jawas from Spaceballs. Never happened. But my wife did take a damn fine picture of the gorilla:

Plus Mommy got to spend some quality outside time with her boys.

And you can get really close to the elephants at the KC zoo. Amazing critters, them:

Our friend James will be pleased to know that I am wearing the All Blacks shirt he got me in that picture. It's a great shirt, and I don't mind wearing it because my beloved Cleveland sports teams haven't yet figured out how to lose to the New Zealand national rugby team. We'll get there.

Which brings me to what's been consuming our lives the most over the last few weeks. Here's a hint:

Okay, I'll admit it, the boys don't seem quite as interested in the playoffs as their old man.

So, for good measure, I tickled them:

Did I Mention?

My parents came to visit and my sister and brother-in-law brought their kids for Easter. So, very briefly,

Version 2 has begun to eat cereal. He's happy about it.

Note, also, that his head is growing at fantastic rates. At his last appointment, he was in the fiftieth percentile for weight and fiftieth percentile for height. Head circumference: eighty-fifth percentile. That's my boy.

Version 1's love of trains has only grown in the last few months, which is nice because the Kansas City Union Station is awesome, and now includes an exhibit called the KC Rail Experience. A steam engine from Lousiana was visiting and parked outside, right next to where a bunch of freight and passenger trains pull up to Union Station.

In other words, heaven:

My boys are too cool.

(Click on the pictures for full-size versions.)

Books, Baby Seals, Screaming Kids, and Christmas

I promised a description of where I was Wednesday, so here goes...

I'm working from home until we move to Kansas next week--holy schnikies--so I've started to gather some of the books for the project (much more on that later). It would be silly to leave without first looking at some of the great book stores in the area. Stores like Politics and Prose and the Dupont Circle Second Story Books are funny places. They have very good selections and they usually know their stuff. Much like the Half Price Books and Village Book Shop in Columbus, they are always busy when I am there, presumably because Americans don't read. Most of the time, the staff is very friendly, but not always. Places like Politics and Prose (which is mostly new books) and Second Story Books (which is all used) tend to take pride in their 'independent book store' status--too much pride.

Let's face it, even though I haven't lifted a weight in half a decade and am left with the strength of the twelve year old captain of the knowledge bowl team, my fat has arranged itself so that I still look like a football player. The male independent book store employees look like they come off an assembly line: 5' 8", 125 lbs., dark-rimmed glasses, skin-tight v-neck sweater over skin-tight dress shirt with over-sized collar, that mussed almost-over-the-eyes 1970s haircut with optional knit winter cap with ear flaps. They have purposely too-loud conversations about the ongoing saga of their stalled Master's degrees. The female employees are also freakishly small--no doubt malnourished from their fruitarian diet--and invariably express their individualism through mass-produced clothes meant to look like they came from a late 1960s-early 1970s consignment store. Their favorite music, usually some woman whining in French over an acoustic guitar, drones on from the store's speakers hidden in the corner of the store.

I'm being unfair--the lady who helped me at Politics and Prose did not fit any of these descriptions. She was a thirty-something mom-looking type who was friendly as could be. Hey, bookstores, no matter how independent, are still businesses. But there are enough of the independent types that the generalization rings true. And there are enough of them treating me like a caveman that I can't help but dislike places that flaunt their independent status. I usually buy at least a few military history titles, which confirms all their worst suspicions. Then again, I am conservative, especially by their standards, and I really don't require the affirmation of book store employees. These days I am less aggravated by the experience than amused by the show.

That amusement is only heightened on days like Wednesday, when I left the progressive book shops to have lunch at one of the madrassas of free enterprise. You might not believe it, but the American Enterprise Institute has an amazing restaurant at which employees and guests can lunch. Our friend Rachel is an employee of AEI, she knew I was coming into the city, so she invited me up for lunch. It was pretty much what you would expect from a meal at a conservative think tank. We started with barbequed spotted owl wings, followed by a creamy dolphin bisque. The salad had artichokes and little pieces of marinated baby seal. For the main course we had a choice of meat from different ethnic minority children. I had the sampler platter.

That's not all. I'm happy to report that Christopher DeMuth and Bill Kristol were having lunch a few tables over. A hologram of a hooded Dick Cheney floated over the table. The Cheney image muttered something about "my apprentice" and Paul Wolfowitz briefly appeared over his shoulder. At one point Kristol dropped his fork, and when he bent over to pick it up a green scaly tentacle dropped from beneath his coat. He quickly recovered. I did not make eye contact.

Seriously, my handlers tell me to say that AEI was very nice. Lunch was excellent and all of the people were very friendly.

My lovely wife got it into her lovely head that we had to go to the White House ellipse and see the national Christmas tree. Our neighbors had gone and informed us that the tree was surrounded by multiple large train sets. Since watching the Polar Express six or seven hundred times in the last month, we have discovered that trains have supplanted the Baby Einstein movies as the favored narcotic for the boy (version 1). We had to see the tree and trains and all that, so why not go to dinner first?

Since you ask, I'll tell you why not: when you take our eldest son to the Buca di Beppos on Connecticut Ave on December 21, 2005 and he falls asleep in the car becaue he did not take a nap that day and you wake him up and carry him to the restaurant and you order pepperoni pizza and meat tortellini and you give him foods and drinks he usually likes, he will throw an absolute and complete fit. He spent most of the meal under the table, which was preferable because his constant whining and crying was muffled. So don't do that ever again. As parents we have to draw the line somewhere, so now he's grounded. His curfew has been moved back to 11:30, and he can't take the car out for a week.

But first we went to see the frickin' tree with the frickin' trains. Which, I have to admit, was pretty cool. Here are a couple pictures:

A choir sang Christmas carols. There was a yule log burning so you could warm your hands. A large nativity scene stood right off the prepared path, directly north of the Washington Monument. Every state and territory provided ornaments for their own Christmas trees all along said path. And there were people, lots of people. I heard French and German and Spanish and some other furriner gruntings I couldn't identify. The people weren't particularly friendly or polite--another reminder that anymore D.C. is more eastern than Southern--but the holiday spirit seemed to make folks a bit less rude, which is a start.

And there were trains (that's the White House in the background):

Ooooh, trains.

The boy (version 2) had a good time too, as best I could tell from the happy grunts coming from under the twenty-seven blankets we had over his carrier.

There it is--life and the holidays in the big city. Neat.

I'll see you in Kansas.

Merry Christmas.
Halloween in Northern Virginia

At first glance, you would swear that our house is in the middle of a beautiful Appalachian autumn. Seriously, not since I was a kid in northern Ohio have I had a yard this covered with golden, red, and orange foliage.

Here's the kicker, apparently our house is the only one in all of Northern Virginia (or at least on our street) where it is actually autumn. I'm not kidding.

Looking south down our street:

Looking north:

We've managed to survive this quasi-Twilight Zone and even to have a little fun, especially with Halloween, the first one the boy could actually enjoy. It helps that he has a friend across the street, and that the friend has other friends, and the other friends have moms, and all the moms get all the friends together and have things they call "parties." Here are some shots of the Halloween party:

As you can see, we've dusted off the old caterpillar costume, miniaturized it, added arms, and stuck it on the boy. Just kidding, his mother made a new one, so my boy and me matched. Awesome. Then the boy came to the realization that he could just go to people's doors, smile, and they would give him candy. Even more awesome. Here are some shots of the big night:

Another terrorized kid.

The Windy City

Okay, so my best friend Ryan lives in Chicago with his fiance Amber. The missus and I were sitting on two $150 airline vouchers that we had to use by the end of the year, and we got a little one coming in the next six weeks. D.C. to Chicago is doable for 150 bones a person, we had never spent any significant time in Chi-town, and the boy needed to see his godfather. Off we went.

Before we left, I contacted our friend Robert, a big fan of Chicago who is currently repelling down glaciers to get to his office in Norway. You'll see Robert in the news soon for going on a rampage and clubbing thousands of baby seals with a piece of frozen cod because he's suffering from acute lack-of-beef poisoning. Nevertheless, he was able to stop the shakes long enough to suggest some stops in the Windy City. Much of what follows was under the guiding hand of the Robert...

The Art Institute of Chicago is full of stuff by dead people. Some favorites that we got to see up close and personal:

Winslow Homer, The Herring Net

Pablo Picasso, Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler

I think even the boy had a good time. Here we are by some American neo-classical sculptures:

As you can see, the pregnancy is going well. I mean, I don't seem to be having any trouble carrying the weight. Wow.

From the Art Insitute we followed Robert's suggestion for some 'plain, hearty food' and went to Berghoff's German Restaurant.

No mean thing, that. Robert has a deep hostility to salt, so when he says food is "plain," well, I was expecting sawdust spetzels and cardboard schnitzel. But it was great. And Ryan and I enjoyed their house lager.

We hopped on the subway and headed back to Ryan's place to put the boy down for his nap and let my lovely and very pregnant wife get some rest. Ryan lives on the north side, only about a mile from Wrigley Field. The Cubbies were playing that day, so on a whim, we started walking toward the field. We got tickets for ten bucks a piece, about seventy-five feet from the right field pole, lower deck. Excellent. Here's Ryan and me at Wrigley. Notice the look of dull-witted concentration as I try to hold the camera still:

Next a few thousand close friends sang "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" (Ryan's next to me laughing because I'm doing my best Harry Carey: "It could be fair!! It could be foul!! It is!!!"):

It didn't matter, but like Harry Carey would say: Cubs win!! Cubs win!!

***

Next day Ohio State kicked hell out of Iowa, and we missed a golden opportunity to drive to Evanston and watch the great game between Penn State and those purple-wearing Wildcats. So I made crack dip, and we drank instead.

Invigorated by the Buckeye's win and Ryan's playing of OSU anthem "Hang on Sloopy"--"Haaang on Sloopy, Sloopy Hang On!! O! H! I! O!"--we got on the bus and did the obligatory trip up the Hancock Building. Here's the view from the Signature Room bar (we drank up there, too):

Can you go up a skyscraper any more without thinking of September 11? Me neither.

We came down from the heavens and walked the streets looking for a place to eat. Funny, this modern world: the boy got to see a horse up close for the first time--in a city of almost three million:

We didn't go into the famous Marshall Fields. The boy had other things in mind, escpecially when he saw The Disney Store. Our journey into Uncle Walt's Empire led to possibly the cutest picture ever:

Followed by possibly the cutest thing the boy has ever done. Apparently inspired by the Mickey Mousey sugary poppy music blaring over the store, the child went to one of the toy displays, grabbed Donald Duck, and began to dance in circles. Complete strangers were taking his picture:

Needless to say, Donald came home with us that night.

For dinner we went to the Rainforest Cafe, a chain restaurant with marginal food but a great jungle atmosphere. The boy was digging the animatronic gorillas. So was my son.

We got back to the apartment, put the understandably exhausted boy down for the night, and went on to have more drinky. In anticipation of the Browns game, and after having one or ten Jack and Cokes, we all (including Ryan) woke up to find out that Ryan had become an artist in the wee hours:

He burned a hole in the mask so the cigarette would stay in place. I'm not kidding. (Totally irrelevant fact: Ryan is a lawyer who works in the appellate public defender's office. That means he represents people who have already been convicted of crimes--he doesn't have to pretend like they are innocent. So every once in a while we'll be talking on the phone and he'll say something like, "I gotta go, I have a meeting with a guy who killed his mom with a weed wacker.")

We watched the game at a sports bar just outside O'Hare called Shoeless Joe's. Ryan insists ole Joe Jackson did much of his damage playing in Cleveland. Ryan's right. The Browns lost.

Still, great trip, great town. To paraphrase that other Chicago tourist Ferris Bueller: if you have the opportunity, I highly recommend it.

Best of all, the boy had a good time. Maybe too good a time. You decide:

Meat Festival '05

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px;
